DOCUMENTING THE HISTORY OF BOY SCOUTING IN LOS ALAMOS

NOTE: My ISP has sold the domain name 'Roadrunner' to Warner Bros. and is changing their name to CYBER MESA. If you have bookmarked this site, please change it from roadrunner.com to cybermesa.com. The old name will work thru June 2000.

Do you have any information about Scouting in Los Alamos? We are collecting as much information as we can about the history of Boy Scouting in Los Alamos and are interested in any information you might have. What are we interested in?

1. Information about Scouting

2. Photographs and scrapbooks

If you have any old photographs, scrapbooks or snapshoots showing scouting activities, we would like to copy them. We will return the originals of everything you provide.

3. Documents

We would like to copy Court of Honor programs, unit rosters, newspaper clippings, unit calendars or anything else you might have.

4. Stories about Scouting in Los Alamos

We all have many memories of Scouting. We would like for you to share yours with us. Funny stories, stories about activities and Scouts and Scouters, and even sad stories.

5. Scouting memorablilia

Do you have old uniforms, patches, unit flags, ribbons earned by your unit or other memorabilia? We would like to photograph or list such items.

We know there is a lot of information out there. We are just hoping we can see it before storage places are cleaned out and items possibly discarded. If you have some "goodies", please contact us (we are in the phone book).

Listed are the Scout units known to have existed in Los Alamos. The information we currently have is summarized. Hopefully, it will remind you about a piece of forgotten information you have 'stashed away' that you can share with us. Thanks for your interest. (Remember, today's information is tomorrow's history. An important part of this project is documenting what your unit is doing TODAY.)

WOOD BADGE
Wood Badge is an advanced training course for Scout Leaders. It was established by Lord Baden Powell to train adults in the Scouting method and gains it name from the wooden beads he gave the first participants after completing the course. These beads are still given to Scouters who complete the approximately seven-day long course and have worked their 'ticket', a series of tasks to be completed by the Scouter that utilize the skills learned in the course. The Scouter has two years after taking the course to complete the ticket.

Once the course has been complete, Scouters may participate on Wood Badge staffs. When they do so, they not only commit significant preparation time for the course, but also agree to work a ticket for that course.
Status A list of Wood Badge participants through 1994 has been obtained from the Scout Office.
