Newar People

The Kathmandu Valley is the original home of the Newars. Spread throughout Kathmandu, Bhaktaput, Lalitpur, and Kirtipur, this caste are known is known for trade. They can now be found scattered in the main towns throughout Nepal. The Newars have their own festivals and even have their own language, Newari. Although trade is their main occupation, Newars can be many things including civil servants and farmers. Nepali art and architecture which decorates Kathmandu, can be credited to Newari artisans.

The Newar community consists of both Hindu and Buddhist Sub-castes and they have their own caste hierarchy, ranging from priest to sweeper.
