The roots of Complexica lie in the science and technologies developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the famed Santa Fe Institute. Complexica scientists have extensive experience in the application of advanced data mining techniques to business problems. Much of this experience has been developed in the financial services industry, dealing with problems such as loan acquisition, customer behavior, fraud detection, loss rate prediction, and profitability.

For instance, Insurance World, a consortium of companies in the Insurance/Reinsurance Industry, engaged Complexica scientists to better understand how catastrophic risks affect their industry. and Dr. John Casti.
Dr. Jones was a scientist at Los Alamos for 17 years. He developed methods that enabled machines to learn from their environment much as humans do, and led and participated in teams that applied these techniques to commercially important problems such as chemical process control, finance and banking, automobile control, fraud detection in tax returns and credit card transactions, traffic control, and control of high-energy accelerators. In 1995, Dr. Jones founded the Center for Adaptive Systems Applications (CASA) to apply this technology to the banking industry. In 1997, he founded Intelligize to apply simulation technology to the insurance/reinsurance industry. In 1999, he founded Complexica with Professor Casti.
Professor Casti is a mathematician and author who has served on the faculties of Princeton, NYU, the University of Arizona, the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis in Vienna, the Santa Fe Institute, the RAND Corporation, and the Technical University of Vienna. He has written numerous articles and seven technical monographs on mathematical modeling. He is editor of the journals Complexity and Applied Mathematics and Computation. In addition to his academic publications, he has written several popular books on science including Paradigms Lost: Images of Man in the Mirror of Science and Searching for Certainty: What Scientists Can Know About the Future.
