We will read the 2005 novel Maps for Lost Lovers by Nadeem Aslam, a Pakistani who has lived in England since he was a teen. Maps for Lost Lovers is a long and richly detailed story. It brings to life the intimate feelings, frustrations, conflicts, and longings of Muslims living in exile (in this case an English town). We learn a great deal about what it must mean to be a refugee in a very alien culture. We also learn about Pakistani customs, foods, folk beliefs, clothing, and relations with Westerners. This story takes place in 1997 and involves a spectrum of Pakistani and Indian people including Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, and non-believers.
Please read pages 1-89 for the first class.
