C-2 Jazz

saxophone.

This course is designed to help participants increase their knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the rich American musical heritage called jazz. Numerous styles of jazz and some of the prominent players associated with these styles will be surveyed—New Orleans, Chicago, Swing, Bebop, etc. Listening to recorded selections and some live music will be an important part of the class. The course will help students learn how to appreciate jazz improvisation, how to understand the musical background of a jazz musician, and what to expect from a jazz ensemble and its performers.

Bob Jones is a musician with a PhD in music theory and composition from the University of Iowa. He plays the clarinet, saxophone, and flute. He has taught music on the college level for more than 40 years and has played in numerous jazz venues in the Midwest. He continues to be an active performer in Santa Fe where he currently plays in and directs the Santa Fe Great Big Jazz Band. Bob taught A Brief Survey of American Jazz Styles for Renesan in Spring 2010.
