I'm looking into building her an exercise wheel. The store bought hamster ball just puts her to sleep. Our pet Ocicat, Max, ignores her. So far she's an interesting pet but we hope her biting my three children will stop. She's abit high strung and we're dealing with it. They have both recently recoverd from a mite infestation that wreaked havoc on their ears (watch out for this!) They are both very lazy, and like to sleep in their tube. They eat dry catfood almost exclusively. They both live together in the same cage, and this can cause conflicts at times. They have even gone so far as to injure each other....Once to the point of bleeding. Southern African hedgehogs are very beautiful - they are small (max. mass 500g or 1 1/4 lb), their spines are a mixture of a very dark brown/black and white, and have a (and of white fur across their forehead just below the spines. Mackie is blind. He was brought to me after having fallen into a swimming pool and his eyes were probably damaged by the chemicals. He also had many other health problems, but I nursed him back to health. He lives in my "hedgie-proof" garden, where he eats bugs and slugs as well as cat pellets, mince, cooked chicken (especially the little bones) and smoked sausages! However, in her may reside the spirit of a Japanese kamikaze. On her third night here I forgot about something I was heating on the stove and managed to burn it and fill the kitchen with smoke. I moved Priscilla's sleeping box from the dining room to our bathroom and put it inside a big box so she wouldn't get loose. Then I opened all the windows and doors to air out the house. When the smoke cleared I picked up her sleeping box and put it back in the habitat without checking to see if she was in there. A few hours later I checked on her and she was gone. She had banzied off the top of the box and was exploring the bathroom. I was panicking because I thought she had escaped out the open door. Having had a taste of freedom, she climbed a sagging towel later that night and escaped to further explore the house while we were sleeping. They are all so different. Prissy loved the exercise wheel until she had babies. Now she doesn't. The same thing happened to Bee Bop. I have found that, in every litter, there is one hedgehog that is naturally gentle and one that is naturally NOT, and the rest are in between. He starts to go into a hibernation mode when the temperature gets much below 70 -- he's a true Florida resident! Male Stories, Characteristics, etc.: </PRE> <TT> Our Spikey is almost a year old, and we have had him since he was a tiny baby. He's a sweet little guy and is a wonderful addition to our family. He's used a litter box from the moment we got him and is quite meticulous. During the summer he was happy to go outside daily for a walk-around-the-yard-and-garden. Two of our four cats acted as babysitter and it was always easy to tell exactly where he was. Our cats find him interesting, but also have great respect for his pokey back. He ignores them completely. Now that it's winter here in Michigan, he's happy to goof off in the house, and has a few places he especially likes to have a nap. When it's time for his to come out of his "home" into the rest of the house, I say, "Spikey, it's time to go for a walk" and hold a yogurt container down for him to walk into to be transported out. He wakes right up, comes scurrying out of his burrow and into the container. The same goes for collecting him, except that once in a while he needs some meal worms as an incentive. We're happy to have a hedgie at our house. Oh ya, he does't like Guinea pigs too much, he will prickle their noses with their spines - its kind of funny yo watch. My hedgehog is now about eight months old and every night just after I turn off the lights he 'chirps' once or twice. When he was about 7 months old he got a cut on his nose from something in his pen, and ever since he has had a little pink scar on his nose. He recently had the opportunity to prove himself like this, and if all went well, he may be able to claim being a father before the year is out. Among his other antics, Velcro is the star of the Hedgehog FAQ, and holds the position of being the FAQ's chief Editor-in-quills. Sprocket is a quiet reserved hedgehog, and spends much of her time being the target of Velcro's (her significant other) desires. Being in seperate cages has helped to protect her virtue until she was old enough, but she has recently had a romatic weekend with Velcro, and with luck, there will be hoglets for Christmas! She has her water bottle, etc by the couch and likes to hide inside the couch. Believe it or not, she crawls up sheets to get on the bed.
