She is still in the process of getting used to humans. She does bite occasionally but is getting better. She eats dry Iams kitten food, mealworms (treats), cottage cheese, cheese, 9 lives wet catfood and raisins. She's new to our household and we are trying new foods all the time. She's most active after 10:00 PM when the lights go down. To calm her we feed her a couple of mealworms. Then she's much less prown to bite or hiss or freak out. I'm looking into building her an exercise wheel. The store bought hamster ball just puts her to sleep. Our pet Ocicat, Max, ignores her. So far she's an interesting pet but we hope her biting my three children will stop. She's abit high strung and we're dealing with it. Any suggestions on the biting would help.

He was becoming friendly until my daughter acquired a ferret. Since then he hasn't wanted to have anything to do with people at home or at school. Obviously a ferret is a natural enemy. Gotcha refuses any insects except hard shell brown beetles and mealworms. Boy can he wreak a cage a night. I'm not sure that the word "frolic" is complete enough to describe his nocturnal activities. Southern African hedgehogs are very beautiful - they are small (max. mass 500g or 1 1/4 lb), their spines are a mixture of a very dark brown/black and white, and have a (and of white fur across their forehead just below the spines. Mackie is blind. He was brought to me after having fallen into a swimming pool and his eyes were probably damaged by the chemicals. He also had many other health problems, but I nursed him back to health. He lives in my "hedgie-proof" garden, where he eats bugs and slugs as well as cat pellets, mince, cooked chicken (especially the little bones) and smoked sausages! He zooms around the garden at high speed and often bumps into things but he seems very happy and healthy otherwise.

I became hooked on hedgehogs early this year when my science teacher brought his hedgehog Hocus. I kept bugging my parents until they got me a hedgehog. She is named pink for two reasons. 1) I just wanted to name my hedghog pinky, 2) She has pink behind her ears and her fur is kind of pinkish. One thing I will say that is negative about Pinky is that she "poops" a whole lot.

However, in her may reside the spirit of a Japanese kamikaze. On her third night here I forgot about something I was heating on the stove and managed to burn it and fill the kitchen with smoke. I moved Priscilla's sleeping box from the dining room to our bathroom and put it inside a big box so she wouldn't get loose. Then I opened all the windows and doors to air out the house. When the smoke cleared I picked up her sleeping box and put it back in the habitat without checking to see if she was in there. A few hours later I checked on her and she was gone. She had banzied off the top of the box and was exploring the bathroom. I was panicking because I thought she had escaped out the open door. Having had a taste of freedom, she climbed a sagging towel later that night and escaped to further explore the house while we were sleeping. Aside from this adventurous spirit, she also has a penchant for polish sausage and the distinguishing mark of a partially chewed right ear

Unfortunately, I become attached to almost all of them. Each one has a name and birth certificate. They are all so different. Prissy loved the exercise wheel until she had babies. Now she doesn't. The same thing happened to Bee Bop. I have found that, in every litter, there is one hedgehog that is naturally gentle and one that is naturally NOT, and the rest are in between. Those that are gentle, I tend to become very attached to. I could ramble on forever. I'm delighted to see Hedgehogs on the internet.

We keep giving him bigger and bigger boxes because we think such curious, wandering creatures need lots of space. He enjoys rearranging his PVC tubes and washcloth (which he sleeps under) as well as his wood shavings. He starts to go into a hibernation mode when the temperature gets much below 70 -- he's a true Florida resident! Does anyone have suggestions about other toys and how to get him interested in a wheel?

He's a sweet little guy and is a wonderful addition to our family. He's used a litter box from the moment we got him and is quite meticulous. During the summer he was happy to go outside daily for a walk-around-the-yard-and-garden. Two of our four cats acted as babysitter and it was always easy to tell exactly where he was. Our cats find him interesting, but also have great respect for his pokey back. He ignores them completely. Now that it's winter here in Michigan, he's happy to goof off in the house, and has a few places he especially likes to have a nap. When it's time for his to come out of his "home" into the rest of the house, I say, "Spikey, it's time to go for a walk" and hold a yogurt container down for him to walk into to be transported out. He wakes right up, comes scurrying out of his burrow and into the container. The same goes for collecting him, except that once in a while he needs some meal worms as an incentive. We're happy to have a hedgie at our house. We don't handle him very much, but stroke and pet him while he's out walking around, which seems to please him very much.

Oh ya, he does't like Guinea pigs too much, he will prickle their noses with their spines - its kind of funny yo watch. My hedgehog is now about eight months old and every night just after I turn off the lights he 'chirps' once or twice. When he was about 7 months old he got a cut on his nose from something in his pen, and ever since he has had a little pink scar on his nose. All in all he is lots of fun and has made me bleed more than once from trying to pick him up when he has been sleeping.
