Ukrainian plus Russian Phrases for Children

"I especially like the inclusion of male and female voices. The sound quality is excellent, and the written booklet for following along is great. I'm sure it will help many people!"

Adopting from Ukraine means you might find yourself in an orphanage that speaks Ukrainian or one that speaks Russian. This newly updated 73 minute CD and accompanying 48-page phrase book prepares you for those once-in-a-lifetime special moments together, with children's words and phrases your child will understand. Features yes/no questions so you will understand their answers too, and plenty of necessary interactions to ease those first few days together, the trip home, and then introducing your child to your house, family and pets!

Over 200 phrases and words in both Ukrainian and Russian EACH, all arranged on 17 cd tracks in chronological order to make learning easy! Quiet, full sound captured digitally at a professional recording studio in Kiev.

The phrases are spoken by real Ukrainians, both male and female, including a male broadcast announcer and a female actress/entertainer. You will hear both speakers say each phrase in Ukrainian, English, and then Russian, with pauses in between so you can repeat them to yourself or out loud. Sascha and Marina have great voices and it's a wonderful opportunity to start getting familiar with the Ukrainian accent.

CONTENTS:

Arriving in Ukraine: Stepping off of the plane in Kiev, you will be greeted by your American speaking host. This collection of greetings, polite words, and goodbyes will be useful in almost any situation during your stay.

Meeting your child: Your first visit to the orphanage can be both emotional and stressful. These phrases will help make interacting with your child easy and fun. Also includes reassuring and affectionate phrases, as well as special "endearing add-ons" that you can pick from to use with almost any phrase on the CD.

Alone with your child: I remember when my facilitator said 'goodbye' and I was left alone with my new daughter at the hotel. Good thing I knew some important yes/no questions and some basic parental directives. Tessa and I got along famously! These essential phrases will certainly help you too.

Naptime and bedtime: Every adoptive parent will tell you that this topic deserves a category of its own! I've assembled the "best of" phrases from hundreds of families regarding this daily ritual of getting your child to sleep! Includes bathing and teeth brushing phrases.

Building vocabulary: These three tracks of mostly words will help expand your skills in the areas of food, clothing, toys and play. A great companion to the highly recommended "First Words" picture books available in most toy and children's stores here.

Arriving home: Your child's first steps into his or her new home are so important. Everything is foreign. These tracks cover everything from meeting family and important people, to showing your child his or her new room, to some basic phrases for introducing pets and how to treat them.

Educational: These three tracks cover basic counting and colors, as well as some important opposites. You may find yourself using these right away or waiting until you are home.

Includes two 48-page pocket-sized phrase books (4 1/4" x 5 1/2"): Easy to read with every phrase spelled out in Ukraininan and Russian phonetically, then in plain English. Includes an explanation of the simple, common sense phonetic system I've developed that captures the nuances of each language without being overly complicated or inconsistent like other phonetic systems for Cyrillic languages. This phrase book is essential and you will find yourself carrying it everywhere with you, because no matter how much you study, the jet lag and emotional weight of the whole trip will make you forget some things and you might say the wrong things at first or be nervous. My own experience adopting from Eastern Europe showed me that you need a handy "cheat sheet" guide like this to get you going! It's the perfect study tool as well.
