This is the UK organization that watches over
baby milk substitute companies (i.e. formula makers) for their compliance (or
rather, non-compliance) with the WHO/UNICEF International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk
Substitutes. They
also publish a hard-core newsletter, part of which is on line, Baby Milk
Action Update. Read it and feel a part of the world community of
breastfeeding activists. |

The World Health Organisation |
Co-authors of the Code (see above), Director
General Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, is a former Prime Minister of Norway.
While Prime Minister, Norway became the first industrialized country to have
EVERY hospital meet the standards of the Baby Friendly Hospital
Initiative. Unlike
the American Academy of Pediatrics which recommends a minimum of one year of
breastfeeding, WHO recommends a minimum of TWO years of breastfeeding. |

Yes, the US is shamefully behind in supporting
breastfeeding women due to the rights of big business over individuals
(mothers and babies)—but Rep. Maloney is trying to get some legislation
through Congress that would help working mothers especially. Currently
the bills are stuck in committee—her aids recommend contacting the committee
members and telling them to lend their support. This is also a good
site if your employer gave you a hard time with breastfeeding—let them know,
and add some fuel to the fire. |
