Internet Resources: What is Sustainability?

• Sustainability Web Ring. The Sustainability Web Ring focuses on the efforts of organizations to achieve sustainable development. You will find information from around the world about how to deal with such crucial issues as: climate change, cleaner production, waste, poverty, consumerism, natural resource management, and governance.


• Sustainable Society Directory intended to offer a comprehensive guide to environmental issues, with emphasis on allowing individuals to get a clearer view of what is happening world-wide. Infrequently updated, however.

Alternative Scenarios

• The Global Scenario Group is a project launched in 1995 by the Stockholm Environmental Institute to examine the transition to global sustainability. They have proposed six scenarios. Publications include Great Transition: The Promise and Lure of the Times Ahead (PDF 922 KB) plus two others describing less positive scenarios. John Bellamy Foster provides an interesting review of Great Transition in the October 2005 Monthly Review (caution: this is a Marxist journal!)


• Chapter 4 of GEO: Global Environment Outlook 3 presents four scenarios.
